Chives are members of the lily family grown for their leaves and flowers, which are equally popular in the garden and in the kitchen. Both onion and garlic chives are grown and used in a similar fashion. Some gardeners use onion and garlic chives as a perennial edging or border plant in a flower border or an herb garden. They also grow well in containers, both alone and in combination with other long-lived herbs such as rosemary.
The seeds take a long time to germinate and need a very cool temperature, less than 60F. After their slow start they grow quickly. The plants can be fairly close together; small clumps (25 plants can be set out 6-8 inches apart in rows. They’ll fill in and make an attractive array. The seed will germinate in 2 to 3 weeks at 60°F. Planting depth: Sow seed ¼ to ½ inch deep. Seeds require darkness to germinate; cover the seed with light planting mix.
